@Matthijs Schrijvers The curved top of the wings means the air has to travel faster (and also become less dense as the area is larger) this causes lift. (When the plane reaches a speed that the lift is great than the weight of the plane). Different planes have different take off speeds. There would be videos on YT already etc.

The surface plate was made from cast iron due to its stability. However these plates were left in the open to “weather” and de stress. Similar to leaving wood to season. Whitworth claimed that he can measure to one millionth of an inch. I don't see how this could have been done in the mid nineteenth century using mechanical means. A steel bar will expand eleven millionths of an inch, per degree centigrade, per inch diameter. On top of this you have to ask yourself how much would the measuring equipment expand and contract as the temperature varied.

I was confused so why don't we just start again an have 1 TH/M an not mm as 1 TH/M 1 thousandth of 1 M. I ask if I take a sheet of metal heat it and keep hitting it how think can I get it and at what size would it be how thick is 4 atoms thick. At what size would it be at the time I hit 1 atom thick. What is the smallest size we can see. All sounds silly but think about it people say cut to the size of 100th the thickness of a human hair just how thick is that.
